Biking/Boat ride in Killarney National Park

I plan on doing a cycling route through the Gap of Dunloe and into Killarney National Park. I have read about using boats in the park to experience the park on the lakes and decrease the mileage on the bicycles. But I have not found whether I need to schedule in advance and make reservations for the boat or if I can just show up to the dock and buy tickets. I will be travelling to Ireland in the first week of September. Has anyone cycled in this area or taken the boat tours?

We took the boat tour through the lakes, but it was part of another daytrip. The trip was jaunting car through the Gap of Dunloe, then a return by boat through the lakes. The tour company was, I think, Deros - they are located on the main street in Killarney. You could contact them to see what is available. The boat was like a huge open rowboat with an outboard motor - so I imagine a bicycle could be loaded onto the boat.

We hiked the Gap of Dunloe last month (June 1st) and took the boat back to Ross Castle from Lord Brandon's Cottage. We reserved our tickets in advance through the TI in Killarney free of charge, but we saw many people purchase them upon arrival at Lord Brandon's. You can either take your bike on the boat from Ross Castle to Lord Brandons (departs at 11 a.m.) and bike back to Killarney through the Gap or bike from Killarney, through the Gap to Lord Brandon's cottage and take the boat back to Ross Castle (departs at 2 p.m.). A word of warning - the trip is beautiful but VERY hilly.

Thanks for the info. Jennifer,
It appears that logistically it would be easier to make the boat ride at 11 am. Could one direction or route be easier than the opposite direction?

I have no clue if one direction is easier than the other. I just remember a lot of hills. We did see a lot of cyclists though. Taking the 11:00 boat would probably be best - then you won't have a "deadline" to make it back to Killarney. You can take your time and stop at Kate Kearney's for a drink after you make it through the Gap! Have a great time!
