Between the Trossachs and Inverness

We will be staying four nights in Dunfermline, north of Edinburgh, in September. From there we can visit St. Andrews, Stirling, and the Trossachs, plus other sites. I have noticed that north of the Trossachs is a huge mountain range, the Grampians. I am not sure that we will go as far north as Inverness.....if we don't, can anyone offer any suggestions as to the best route to take to go west toward Skye and what we might see on the way through the Grampians. Thank you.

Susan, yes, it's a large mountain range, but it's not the Alps or the Rocky's. According to Michelin it's a little over 3 hours to Inverness from Edinburgh, which is probably a slight under estimate. The A9 is a busy road and while its not 4 lane all the way, it's not a windy twisty road either. So, I'm not sure what your concerns are about the Grampians, but I would not let them stop me from going to Inverness!

To get to Skye, you can go via Mallaig or the Skye Bridge. The former is ferry. There are number of ways to go, one is to head up the A9 and accross on the A889 to A86 and on to Mallaig. Or go north to Inverness and take the road down past Loch Ness to the A887 to the A87 and on to the Kyle of Lochalsh and Skye Bridge.

All of these are pretty good roads and have fantastic scenery.

If you have some specific worries about the Grampians let me know. You can PM me or post.
