Best place to stay in York?

We'll be in York for 3 nights after 'doing ' London. Any recommendations on the best B&B/pension to stay at? Also, anyone know of a particularly good guide for a walking tour of the town? Thanks,

loisanne,

I stayed at the HI Hostel on my last visit to Bath, so can't comment on B&B's. You might check the England Guidebook as there are lots of listings.

The "official" York walking tours provided by volunteer guides are among the best. These last about two hours and leave from Exhibition Square in front of the T.I. These are free from what I recall.

Be sure to tour York Minster, hike the stairs to the roof if you're energetic and take in an evensong service if possible. Also, the Shambles is a great area! The National Railway Museum (also free) provides an incredible look at the rail history of the U.K.

I also found the Red Bus tour to be a great way to see the main sites of the city.

Happy travels!

We stayed at the Bentley in May 2008. It was easily walkable to the center of town, but located a few blocks outside the city wall. We walked there easily with kids there from the train station, maybe 10 minutes, max. Margaret was very helpful in helping us with all our needs. She had good info. about what to do and times that things were open. Breakfast was good. The rooms were lovely, the website shows them how they looked when we were there.

A few weeks ago, we stayed at the Sycamore Guest House, which was a B&B recommended by Rick Steves. The room was tight, but really had no complaints. I'd recommend it and we'd stay there again. Search for "Sycamore Guest House York" and you'll find a web site.

I stayed in a great business hotel within easy walking distance to the cathedral/shambles. I thought it was a Jurys but it must have been something similar.

Many times weekend rates for business hotels are better than weekend rates for hotels that cater to tourists. The opposite is often true during weekdays (especially off season). Be sure to take that into account when looking for a place.
