Im looking for the nicest, closest town to Shannon Airport to stay at the night before driving my rental car back to the airport to head back to the States. I have stayed in Ennis and liked it. Any other suggestions? Please private message me as well. Thanks!
It's not a town, exactly, but there are numerous B&Bs along the Bunratty road next to the castle. It's just six miles from the airport. Across the street from the castle and folk park is a little shopping center, and Durty Nelly's pub and restaurant is across the street to the side of the castle. It's just a quick drive to the airport.
I've stayed in Limerick. It's an interesting small city with a few museums and good walking. It's only a few miles from Bunratty Castle and Shannon Airport.
Hi Frank, We stayed at the Grey Gables B&B in Ennis this September. Mary was a gracious hostess, served a great breakfast, and gave us specific driving instructions to Shannon Airport--only about a 30 minute drive from the hotel. If I remember right, it was 75 Euro in September for a double room including breakfast. (www.bed-n-breakfast-ireland.com) We had a great dinner at the Poet's Corner Pub just a short walk away the evening we arrived in Ennis. Have a great trip!
We stayed at the Avalon B&B (http://www.avalonbnb.net/)in Shannon--about 10 minutes, if that, from the airport. There's not much to do in Shannon, but the B&B was really nice. We took a short walk to a pub that served really good Chinese food.
Check out the Bunratty Lodge. I haven't stayed there myself, but I've read lots of positive reviews.
Like you, I've stayed in Ennis and would happily stay there again.
I agree with Nancy. Bunratty is a great last night stop. Supper at Gallaher's Seafood is fabulous. We stayed at Bunratty Castle Mews B&B last June and loved it. Delores, the owner is the essence of Irish hospitality. She will wrap up your time in Ireland with a warm glow. From that B&B you are only 10+ minutes to the airport -- very easy trip.
Hi Frank,
We also stayed in Bunratty before flying out of Shannon the next morning. It really is a short, easy drive to get to the airport. We stayed at a nice B&B on the same road as the Bunratty Castle called Ashgrove House. We were only here one night, but really liked it and the owners were super nice and accommodating. Good luck!
In 2006, we did as others have suggested here, and stayed in one of the many B&Bs on Bunratty Road. Very close to Shannon.
In 2007, we decided it wasn't that important to stay as close as possible to the airport. There are lots of more interesting places within an easy drive of the airport, as you discovered with Ennis.
So we decided to make our last night in Ireland memorable. We stayed at The Mustard Seed in Ballingarry, Co. Limerick. Sprang for the prix-fix dinner and loved it. I highly recommend it.
Have a great trip!
Hi Frank,
Some great suggestions. However, I would like to add that whatever you do don't stay in Limerick. In my opinion, it's the worst city in Ireland. Stay in a little & B in a village near Shannon.
I stayed at Ashwood House in Doora, Ennis in September. Denice was a great hostess and there is a super pub in Quin just up the road for supper. Ashwood House is only 15 minutes from the airport and has a nice country setting. Check out the website.
