Best London Restaurants on a Budget

I know that London is expensive. Any good suggestions on great places to eat? Not cheap...I'm not talking about McDs or BK. Any good suggestion on place for the BEST Fish and Chip? Chinese? Italian? Pubs-that serve good food?

Most London pubs serve good food at lunch time. For lunch, go where the Londoners go- the lanes and alleys in the City (near St Puals), we also like Mayfair area for pub lunches. Many sit down sandwich shops. Chinese- try the edges of Soho and Chinatwon near the Theatres. Where is your hotel; fish and chips - except for a few pricey in-town places, I have had more luck in the suburbs

Let me start by saying I'm a real take away gal when in London - especially on a nice day. It's not that I'm cheap, its just so great to be out and about whenever I'm in town. Hands down the best time to be had is to take fish & chips to the park to eat while people watching. You may want to use this for lunch options but are great when strapped for time for dinner. Suggestions for fish & chips the locals eat for take away are Fish Bone (tube: Great Portland St or Warren St - where I go for Regent's Park picnic), Fryer's Delight (tube: Holborn - taxi driver's love this place), North Sea Fish Restaurant (tube: Russell Sq), Laughing Halibut (tube: St James Park - closes at 8pm - old fashioned, office workers top choice). Sandwiches: Benjy's, Pret A Manger, & Eat have many convenient locations. Central places: Mooli's in Soho (tube: Tottenham Ct or Leichester Sq - fantastic Indian wraps), Gaby's Deli (tube: Leicester Sq - super busy 12-2pm), and Brasil by Kilo (tube: Tottenham Ct).

I got back about a week ago and i seriously had one of the best sandwhiches i have ever had at Marquis of Westminster pub in the victoria station/pimlico neighborhood. It was called something like the ham cheese onion and tomato. it was unbelievably good. around 4 pounds i think. It;s a nice pub, a little loud, but classic.

Time Out has a useful listing of budget restaurants: http://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/features/5617.html. The Stockpot, listed in Time Out, is a classic. Can't help with recommendations for fish n chips, but there's budget Chinese food in Chinatown. Elsewhere, the Royal China Restaurant at 13 Queensway (Bayswater area) is well-regarded. Wagamama's is popular for its authentic and unfussy Japanese/ Korean dishes.

Wagamama is great for fresh, tasty Asian food. There are quite a few in London.

We love Gordon's Wine Bar near the Embankment tube stop - daughter and I can split a plate of 3 cheeses, bread, and pickle for dinner for less than 10 GBP. Perfect for a light pre-theater meal-though the seating area is so small that we've always headed outside to find a table. I think they also offer more substantial dinners if you prefer. Check the RS London book for more information.

If you like Italian try San Marco - a one minute walk from Paddington Station. Drink (soda),+ shrimp and avocado salad, main course pasta and meat dish+ dessert + service charge (10%) for 19 pounds. Really nice pizzas run 7-9 pounds and a large portion of lasagna is 6.80.

I think is called the Fryer or maybe Fish Fryer. A small fish & Chip shop along from the Victoria Coach Station has good fish & chips. We have eaten there a couple of times and found it good. Chrck out the fellow cutting up potatoes dor the french fries - amazing!

We really loved Pizza Express for their Caesar salads and Diavolo pizza. Actually the best fish & chips we had was at the Trafalgar Tavern in Greenwich. Excellent pub food & atmosphere at The Lord & the Moon on Whitehall.

Zia Teresa is a charming trattoria-style restaurant across the street from Harrod's. It has really good Italian food at a reasonable price.

Pub Grub. The Sherlock Holmes just of Trafalgar SQ. on Northumberland St. Great Fish & Chips. You can eat in the pub our upstairs in the restaurant which has a larger menu. Also Seashells of Lisson Grove for fish & chips. Brown Restaurant on St.Martins Lane has a good pre theatre menu of two courses for a set price. Several options available. One of us usually orders a starter and a main and the other of us a main and a dessert and we will share the starter and the pudding.
