We will be staying one night half way between the Cotswolds and the Northumberland area. I was thinking about the city of York. Any thoughts or other suggestions?
What do you want to see? Why don't you want to drive the four and a half hours in the same day? How about a bit of a clue? And, there's nothing wrong with York, if that was your question.
I wanted to break up the trip. I just wanted to figure out what the most worth while overnight would be. Would you pick somewhere else over York if you were booking somewhere between the Cotswolds and Northumberland?
If you draw a line from, say, Gloucester to Newcastle, you will notice that it goes through the main midland and northern industrial areas. There are many places that you could stop and find something interesting, but if we avoid the big cities (Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield) and think about scenic alternatives to York, Buxton comes to mind. It's a spa town in the Derbyshire Peak District National Park: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buxton Or if you want to drive a bit further on the first day, how about Harrogate, another spa town, this time in Yorkshire: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrogate If you are just passing through then you won't have time to do justice to a visit to York anyway. It needs a whole day, preferably 2 or even 3.
