We have never traveled, but our son, Mark Walters, an opera singer from the US is singing at the opera in Bergen Norway in June and we would like to go. We do not know anything about what to do [where to stay, fun stuff to do, where we should go, or anything at all]Can you please give us suggestions, please? I think Norwegian places to stay would be the most fun.
Thanks, Ruth Ann
Bergen is a great city! Rick's Scandinavia guidebook has an entire chapter devoted to it. In the summer months the four star hotels are very cheap; checkout the two Radisson hotels in the city. It's easy to reach by air, but the funnest way to get to Bergen is via the all-day Norway in a Nutshell tour from Oslo (you can also do it in the reverse direction from Bergen): http://www.norwaynutshell.com

Hi Ruth Ann,
You are going to LOVE Bergen. It is one of my favorite places in all of Europe. We stayed at a Best Western when we were there and it was very nice.
I would definitely recommend the Norway in a Nutshell tour of the Fjords. It's also fun to just walk around Bergen and explore. There's the fisherman's Warf, take a gondola (funicular) up to the top of the mountain...and you can hike down if you prefer.
Have a blast!
I really liked Bergen. I got there by high speed passenger ferry from Balestrand on the Sognefjord. I saw some of the best street buskers anywhere, the harbour is beautiful and I went to Grieg's House to listen to a concert. I stayed at the YMCA: cheap and great location but not a particularly grand hostel - I've stayed in much better places. But I was travelling alone.
