Beddgelert as a Base in North Wales

Is Beddgelert a good base to spend 3 or 4 nights in North Wales before heading to London? Spent 2 nights in Conwy two years ago and really want to see the Snowdonia area that we missed. stay would be over Easter weekend. Any comments would be appreciated including at which B & B to stay. Thanks, Dave

Begggelert would be a fine place for a base in Snowdonia. We chose Betys-y-Coed as a base and stayed at B&B Bryn Afon. The town has some great little restaurants as well as a neat pub with good food. The B&B was very nice and the owner was very helpful with recommending sights. We loved the area and near the town of Llanrwst is a 500 yr old tea room that is not to be missed, Tu Hwnt ir Bont-well known in the area. No shortage of charm and hiking opportunities in Snowdonia.

Nothing wrong with it at all. You might want to consider spending one day out of the mountains and take a look at the castles at Harlech and Caernarfon (one's fifteen miles south, the other's fifteen miles north) - - those two are probably two of the three best in the country.

I think Beddgelert is a great choice. We used it as a base the last time we were in N.Wales. Easy access to the LLechwedd slate mines and Mt Snowdon. BTW if you plan to take the train up the mountain reservations are usually needed. We stayed one night at the Beddgelert Antiques Tea Room and B&B..only one night because they were booked after that. We moved to the Prince Llewllyn Hotel nearly next door. My journal says it was not as cutesy as the BATR &B&B but it was clean and the bathroom was large. hmmm Both were fairly cheap and cheerful. The Tanronnen (pub) just over the bridge pulls a good pint and the food is quite good. The Royal Goat hotel is a bit more posh but their stickey toffee pudding is nice. My journal also says that this is a very "postcard worthy" place. I'm a huge fan of Beddgelert.

Thank you all for your great travel tips for North Wales. From your comments and RS' guidebook it appears there is much to do in the area. Wish we were leaving tomorrow. Have a wonderful 2012. Cheers,
Dave
