Be careful of the Aurlandfjord hotel in Norway

We stayed at this hotel in Aurland Noway a couple of weeks ago. We sat down for dinner when a hord of bused tourists decended and ate everything on the buffet.I complained to the staff and was told to wait. Nothing changed and all we got to eat was a couple of potatos. The next morning, I told the owner I was not paying for a meal we did not eat. When I went to pay the morning we left, I found he had run through my bill without my approval using the credit card information I gave to guaranty the room. I asked to change the amount and was told it could be done, no changes were possible. Later, waiting for the bus, I talked to a member of the staff and mentioned what had happened. That person said he (the owner) does that when he knows the guest will not be back.

There is no need to have overnight accomodation at the Aurlandfjord hotel at Aurland. That is the "luxury hotel" at Aurland, but it is a very old house made of wood. At Aurland I found the Aabelheim Pension to be pleasant, at half the price of the price for a room at the Aurland Fjordhotell. In months other than June - August, the Aabelheim Pension does not serve breakfast. I was there in May of 2007 : Guests at the Aabelheim Pension were welcome to eat breakfast (big buffet) in the Aurlandfjord hotel, across the street. Breakfast there was very satisfactory. (And there was not any other place in Aurland that serves breakfast).
I recommend stopping at Aurland for a night while doing the "Norway in a Nutshell" fjord trip.
