Bath Highlights

If you had to choose 3 things to do in Bath, what should we see for sure? Wish we could be there longer, but it is just a glimpse this time.

Visting the Baths of course, number one, so interesting. I also like walking through the church right there in the square, the old memorial markers are interesting reading ( one poor family buried like three of their children under 10,, year after year, very sad) . I also enjoyed my visit to the Costume Museum .

Thank you all very much. Those were mostly what we thought, but the boat trip and the lawn bowling sound really fun. I really appreciate it. Bon Voyage we leave in a couple of hours.

If you are a Jane Austen fan you may enjoy doing a tour of areas associated with her and her novels that were set there, visiting the Jane Austen Center, and having tea in the pump room. If you are interested in historical clothing and architecture, you may like the Costume Museum and just walking around the city to view the buildings. It is a very walkable town.

My daughter and I enjoyed greatly the Mayor's Guides' Walking Tours. Rick describes more fully in books, but they are daily at 10:30 and Sun-Fri at 14:00. They are free, and last 2 hours, but you don't have ot stay the entire time. (We had to duck out early but wished we could have stayed). They leave from the Pump House. Just show up. www.bathguides.org.uk

Other than the Baths, there are no "must sees" since it will depend on your interests. The other possibilities are all very good. I'd add just walking around exploring for an hour, it's such a beautiful town. Or shopping if that is your thing. Or tea at the Pump Room. Heck, I loved watching lawn bowling...

Martha,
As others have stated, it really depends on your own interests. In my opinion, the Roman baths are fabulous and enough on their own to justify a trip to Bath. We spent several hours there. I also enjoyed the Museum of Bath at Work just to see the antique factory fixtures and particularly because the people at the museum were great fun to chat with. On the other hand, I found the so-called Fashion Museum and the Assembly Rooms (essentially a big, empty ballroom) were disappointments. But I am not a particular fanatic of Jane Austen. Lunch at Sally Lunn's wasn't memorable, but my wife and I both enjoyed trying the waters at the Pump Room.

Aside from the great Roman Baths that everyone is correctly recommending I'll strongly second the Mayor's walking tours - great history, background, highlights of the town and free! We took the Abbey (right next to the Baths) tower tour and found it very interesting - good rooftop views of the city and your get to be in the bell tower when they ring. Assembly rooms are only interesting to Jane Austen fans and the fashion museum is interesting if a fashion museum sounds interesting to you. (We had the National Trust pass so these sites were "free" and so worth a look around.) There is also the jane Austen center and the tour of No. 1 Royal Crescent for a period look at Bath's social history - didn't do these but some people like it. =Tod
