Planning a day trip from Bath, trying to decide between Oxford or Salisbury? I travel to absorb the place and city, not necessarily run from sight to sight. Will be traveling by train. Any advice would be great. Thanks!
Oxford is about 90 minutes away by train, Salisbury just under an hour. If it's just for a day, you might want to consider the city of Bristol (a mere 15 minutes away by very regular two/three an hour trains) where the extraordinary Victorian ship SS Great Britain is moored in the rejuvenated dockside area. Perhaps consider Glastonbury. If you're into the odd, the village is the centre of all things New Age and esoteric and home to the Abbey where King Arthur is supposed to have been laid to rest! But I believe that would mean catching a no. 376 bus... I have written a quick guide to the latter on another website but I'm not sure whether I can give a link here? Oh, let's give it a go! http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/66bd8/4c4a3/
I'd vote for Oxford.
Salisbury can feel more relaxed than Oxford. We enjoyed the cathedral, the cathedral close area. walking through the watermeadows to get that famous view of the cathedral . And generally felt more at peace there. Although we also enjoyed Oxford it is a bigger and busier town. You generally have to hunt for the colleges. Depends on what sights you would prefer
Thanks, I am flying into Bristol so have that covered, and will be taking some training in Glastonbury for a week. :-). I think I wanted a destination less busy so Salisbury maybe the way to go.
