backwards or frontwards

What do you think for a route London, York, N. Wales to Cotwolds or reverse? We are going to be in London for a week and then off to the other areas. I am kind of leaning towards York last since it would be city, to mellow country back to city. What do you think?

At what point are you picking up the rental car?

After we leave London, if we go the Cotwolds first then we would most likely pick iit up in Oxford. If we go to York first then we would take the train to York and pick up the car on the way out of York.

Your plan sounds good, with York last. Have you driven before in the UK?

Hi Kris, I would go to York first then over to North Wales then Cotswolds after leaving the Cotswolds you could drop the car off at Heathrow the day before you fly out. Take taxi (a 15 minute ride) to Windsor and spend the night, you would have a couple of hours in the morning you could walk around then take cab back to Heathrow.

If you make York the last stop, turn in the rental car there when you arrive. Unless you plan to tour Yorkshire, a car in York is more trouble than it is worth. Plan to spend the night before you fly out at a Heathrow hotel. (I'm assuming a morning flight.) You can stay in York the day before until 5 or 6 pm, then catch a train for the 2-hour trip to King's Cross. Grab a cab across town to Paddington, take the Heathrow Express to the airport, and check into your hotel. You won't need to deal with the hassle of driving at Heathrow, and you can get a bit more sleep. If you are on an evening flight out of Heathrow, you might be able to spend the last night in York and get to London and out to Heathrow in time. I took a 5:20pm out of York, grabbed a cab at King's Cross and the Express at Paddington and was in my room at the Sofitel -- very nice but expensive -- at Terminal 5 at about 9:00 pm.

If you pick up a rental car in Oxford, make sure you print out the address and phone # and a map where it is. Two summers ago we returned a rental car to Hertz there, and had a very hard time finding the place. No one we asked knew where it was. It was on a obscure side street. Luckily, it was a short walk from there to the train station and then we took the train into London.
