My partner and I will be in Edinburgh for 5 days in June. We were going to travel to from Edinburgh to Inverness but have reconsidered and thought we could fill in 5 days there so have decided to stay in Edinburg and do trips out and about.. any advice you can give on the best place to stay and what to do will be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Lots of people have recommended places to stay in Edinburgh. You might google the site to find the threads. My favorite place is the Inverleith Hotel near the Botanic Gardens. I like be a bit out of the hustle and bustle, but close enough to get into it with a quick bus ride or easy walk. I always suggest that you start a day in Edinburgh at the Castle. You can get a good view of the city from there and of course, so much of the history is based there. Then, a walk down the Royal Mile. Get a good guidebook and figure out which of the sights you want to stop at. If you have a rainy day (rainy, not damp, you can't let a spot of wet stop you) then the Museum of Scotland is a good pick. It's a great museum. I like the art galleries as well. The National Gallery is in Prince's Garden, but the portrait gallery and the Dean and other gallery are good too. I like the Georgian House in New Town. I would recommend a day trip to Stirling. It's again loaded with history and the castle is spectacular. Linlithgow is an easy train ride as well. For that matter, its' a quick train trip to Glasgow if you want to check out Scotland's biggest city. Others recommend St. Andrew's as a nice day trip. You'll also want to look into the tours. Check the TI near Waverly Station. You can likely get one to Roslyn Chapel or to other castles in the borders. I think someone said that there was a trip to the Trossachs. I think that there is even one to the highlands, but that would be a heck of a lot of bus riding and I'm not sure I would do that. ; ) Have a good trip.

Be sure to do the Whisky Experience. It is just down the Royal Mile from the castle. It has a "disney type" ride that lets you see the history of whiskey making in Scotland. At the end you get a free "wee dram" sample of the whisky of the day. There is a coach (bus) tour from Edinburgh to Inverness. It is a nice way to get a taste of the highlands. You get to see Loch Ness and take a short cruse up to Urquart Castle. Well worth a day.
You do not need a tour to see Rosslin Chapel. The bus costs a few pounds and runs often. It is definitely worth seeing and the town is an attractive little place. There is a guide to take a group of twenty or so people through RC and our guide was very knowledgable--the history of the chapel is quite fascinating and the interior interesting. As others have mentioned, be sure to visit the art gallery, Edinburgh Castle, walk the Royal Mile, see Holyrood Palace, etc. You can climb Arthur's Head near Holyrood Palace. Near Edinburgh Castle is an interesting restaurant called The Witchery--has a set menu for lunch that is a decent price (dinner seemed pricey). Lots of atmosphere there. Have a great trip to Scotland!
We like to stay at the Royal British. It is across Princes street from the rail station. Very easy to walk over to the Roayl Mile, etc. and just across Princes St. from Waverly bridge, where you can catch the hop on/off bus. They have a good breakfast too.
Tarn - Here is a link to a place to stay in Edinburgh,www.mingalar.eu. Their rates are fairly resonable. There is a ghost and goblin tour at night in Edinburgh that we liked, also The Edinburgh castle is nice to see. There is also a decent pizza place near the castle
