Two senior couples are traveling to Norway and onto Stockholm for 2 weeks of travel in June/July 2011. We are looking for B&B or other lodging recommendations in Norway as well as for 3 nights in Stockholm (end of trip). Your recommendations and tips/hints would be greatly appreciated. Do you have Rick Steves' Scandinavia Guide Book yet? If so, good. If not, you should get it as soon as possible as it has lots of recommendations for both Norway and Stockholm that we used when we went thru the Scandinavian countries.
Yes, we have the Guide Book and have watched most of the sections. We don't recall a listing of B&Bs, however, just the recommendation to use them where possible. Other thoughts or tips are appreciated.
You might try going to the local library and looking at the travel books on Norway and Sweden for ideas, without having to purchase a lot of different books. You can also do an internet search for bed and breakfasts in the cities you want to visit. You can access travel websites online, like Frommer's and Lonely Planet; each country also has some tourist information online if you search.
There is also a website called airbnb.com (and there are some similar websites) where people can offer their rooms, apartments, houses, etc. (There was an article in the NYT a few months ago). At airbnb.com, they post pictures, and list amenities, basic cost and how many people may stay at a time. Sometimes there are comments by people who have stayed at a certain locale so you can feel more secure about staying there. You can also e-mail those you are interested in to get a better feel for the place and ask any other questions. I've not personally used the service but might try it when I go to Norway this spring and have to stay away from my relatives on short trips. There is a great variety I've seen, from hosts who are around and can pick you up at the airport and suggest places to visit, to people who leave you alone. Good luck, and bon voyage!
In 2006 we stayed at the Wellington Hotel in Stockholm - was one of Rick's recommendations then. I know the following year when we were going back again, it had gone up in price so we didn't stay there. But, we loved the hotel - had a very nice room and the breakfast buffet was FANTASTIC! Also, a good location.
We usually stay with friends in Stockholm, but one time we stayed at a B&B that I just loved. It's in a very old building on a side street in Gamla Stan - perfect location. The decor is very Swedish and charming, and the breakfast is good. I thought long and hard about staying here because it was kid of pricey, and it has flaws, but it sounded like exactly the experience I was looking for. I would definitely stay here again. I would recommend reading the reviews in Trip Advisor. I should point out you need to be able to manage narrow circular steps to stay here.
