Are there sufficient ATM's at Heathrow so as to avoid pre buying pound sterling for cab ride into London?
I saw a line-up of ATMs at Arrivals in Heathrow Terminal 1. However, I couldn't tell which bank they were. I didn't see any for Barclays, which I use because of its connection with Bank of America.
I've always had bad luck with ATMs at Heathrow and Gatwick. I usually arrive in Europe on Monday mornings after my transatlantic flight, thus the ATMs have always been out of money after the busy weekend, and haven't been refilled yet. It's not a big deal as I can use my credit card to purchase my Heathrow/Gatwick Express ticket, and use the ATM machines at one of the train station in central London.
There are ATMs all over Heathrow. Just make sure you are using one associated with a bank, not a currency exchange machine.
You do have to be careful about the bank association - the only machines I passed from the international arrivals to the tube tunnel were not associated with a bank. I'm sure there were more around, but you just have to watch what they're actually for.
And just because people are always concerned - last week I used my non-chip Canadian debit card from a Barclay's machine (uses Plus system). First machine spit it out, second had no problem.
Just bring an adequate amount of cash with you. I always go with at least 100 GBP cash.
have been to London 6 times-always used ATM in airport-info desk can tell you where they are-as said so often on posts here-always take two cards-in case one is "eaten" or rejected-take out maximum amount you need to avoid fees and time looking for another ATM-have a money belt-several times in London I felt pickpockets attempting to "rob" me.We carry some American money just in case for backup but never have had to use it
Barclay's seems to have a number of ATMs at Heathrow. Go to http://www.multimap.com/clients/places.cgi?client=barclays and search for "Heathrow"
