atms and creidt cards in Scotland

I have been told that Great Britain credit cards and ATM cards have security chips and pins in them and American cards do not. Several people have said that without the chips our cards will not work. Has anyone had any problems or experiece with this. we use capital one visa and chase atm, also suntrust bank.

If you browse the message board you'll find numerous posts on this topic. Bottom line: your US ATM cards and credit cards will be just fine. You'll be able to get cash out of any ATM and most every retail establishment will happily accept your US Visa & Mastercard.

The only places your cards probably won't work is automated credit card machines such as gas pumps or toll machines on toll roads, but all you have to do is go to the attendant and they'll accept your card.

Looks like I was writing my post while Steve - who is speedy - was posting his. Hence the redundancy.

Lynda, your cards will work...your ATM card has to be connected to a checking account only, it can not be connected to savings. In the UK (and Europe) the machines do not give you a choice between checking and savings. If it is connected to a savings it will not work.

Robin, Thanks for the info. on using cards in Great Britian. We travel to Europe every May and have heard conflicting info on cards without chips having problems in Great Britain. Have never had any problems in the past in any other countries.
