April In London

Everyone knows there is to be a wedding in April in London on, what, the 29th? That said, does it make sense that my favourite places to stay are filling up as early as the 17th when we plan to be there?? It is unlikely that those invited to the wedding would be staying here and I can't think that people from inside (or outside)the UK would stay in London that long just to stand on line hoping to see what they can see on the day. Is there some other big event taking place in April?

The London Marathon is April 17th. 46,500 people usually take part in it....so there goes all the rooms...it's one of the largest marathons in the world.

There are also several "Bank Holidays" in April. With the wedding thrown in I think there are like 3 (Easter is one)!!! Plus it may be 1/2 term or end of term for some schools. So... lots of Brits will also be on vacation (holiday as they call it).

Here is today's travel article from the BBC website. The subject is the Royal Wedding, but the REST of the article may help you. More to the point of your question, it gives a variety of places to stay, some in out-of-the way places, just in case you encounter crowds for the marathon who fill up the hotels for your time slot. Also, I think the whole month of April has become tremendously popular as a time to go to London and avoid the summer crowds. This may account for the hotels filling up also, of course. http://www.bbc.com/travel/blog/20110110-travelwise-going-to-london-for-the-royal-wedding Hope this helps you find a place to stay!

Thank you everyone. It only made sense that there was summat going on and a marathon sounds as good as anything as does that more people want to visit in April to avoid the summer crowds. I was able to book us at Premier Travel Inn at Southwark.
