Apartment in London - Aldgate

Hello, Can anyone comment on whether Aldgate (Leman Street) would be suitable place to stay for visiting London. We are interested in staying near Spitalfields where our daughter is, and also want a place that would be suitable for enjoying London's restaurants, etc. We had a b&b lined up, but at the last minute my son was able to get away and now we are three travelers (me, my husband and son). For the end of June, we are having difficulty finding accommodations for all three.

Yes, it would be a suitable place to stay. Aldgate is in the City Of London (the old part of London that was inside the Roman City Walls), making it a convenient location for walking to a lot of sights. You are walking distance to the Tower of London and St. Paul's. Conveniently, you are also right by the tube. The nearest London Underground station is Aldgate (of course) on the Circle and Metropolitan Lines. Circle Line is the yellow line on most tube maps, and will take you quickly to other locations and tourist sites around London. Many large insurance offices are located in Aldgate, such as the Willis Corp., and Lloyd's of London, and many good pubs and restaurants exist there to cater to the business lunch and dinner crowd. Away from the business district, Brick Lane has many good Indian restaurants. Those are the "pros" of that location. The "con" of that location is that you are at the extreme east end of London, and if you want to go to a lot of sightseeing, like going to Westminster Abbey or Buckingham Palace, those things are across town to the west. But that is easily solved by hopping on the Circle Line at Aldgate. Also, many of the more touristy areas to the west have many more restaurants than the Aldgate area. But again, hop on the tube to go to them. It is too bad that the B&B you had lined up could not take in one more person now that your son has joined your party. Have you tried looking on trip advisor.com? I can recommend Hotel Indigo London Tower Hill. Some of their rooms have a bedroom with an attached small living room with a nice long couch which would make up into a comfy bed for your son. Look them up on trip advisor and look at the reviews and photos.

Nancy, Here is another option for you to check out. Check the London School Of Economics. They have multiple locations around London. They rent spare dorm rooms and apartments to tourists. This is their website: http://www.lsevacations.co.uk/ You get ensuite (mostly), kitchenette, and access to student services such as the laundry room and some locations have a cafeteria on the first floor (more important for breakfast than any other meals). At their website, look in the column on the left for "LSE Top Floor" and click on that for the best accommodations. These are the apts. or suites. These are not in the location you have requested (Aldgate), however, there are several locations that are convenient to the Circle Line tube, and you could be at your daughter's location in a flash. Also, the LSE apts. are centrally located to London's sights and restaurant and theatre scene. And these would definitely provide the room you need to include your son. Some top floor suites are 2 bedroom with a living room in between. This is a good quality place to stay. Good luck, and have a great time!

Thanks so much for the advice - I had looked at London School of Economics when I was initially planning my trip and the Top Floor locations had been taken by March. There's always a chance of cancellations. I will let you know how things work out!

I'd also recommend checking with this flat: http://www.trinitysquareflat.com/6922.html . It is not in Aldgate, but at Trinity Square, literally steps from the Tower Hill Tube station. Tell Paul that Lorie Marsh recommended you check with him. I hope you have a great trip.
