Anyone been to Ireland in January?

Has anyone been to Ireland in January and could tell me what to expect? What won't be available and/or what to take advantage of w/o summer crowds? Anything special?
We will be in the southern half for two weeks.

I've been to Ireland twice in February. Both times the weather was surprisingly good, though there was mist/rain on a couple of days. Nothing that hampered my plans, though. Many heritage sites close or have very reduced hours until the first of March, so check a good guidebook for that information. The Michelin Green Guide has a great listing in the back of hours and prices for most locations.

One key thing that I have done is plan alternate activities in case of bad weather. If you plan to hike and it's raining, have an inside activity planned that you can do instead. The best part of off-season travel is the chance to see the things that others wait in line for in the summer - Book of Kells, Newgrange, Blarney Castle.

I've been to Ireland a few years ago in late January. The weather wasn't really a problem. It was warmer there than what we left at home. It rains in Ireland at any time of the year, you just get used to it.
Most of the sights were opened, but the hours were somewhat more limited--mostly 9 to 5. The great thing was that we had most sights to ourselves and everyone we encountered had time to chat. I've gone to Ireland 2 times since in March and absolutely love the offseason there.
