Anyone been to Dumfries and Galloway?

I have a long weekend at the end of my upcoming trip to Scotland. I'm torn between spending time in old haunts exploring a new area. I've not been to the extreme southwest of Scotland. I know that Caerlaverock Castle and Sweetheart Abby are on most lists of things to see. And it looks like Mereshead Nature Preserve would be beautiful. Kirkcudbright might be a good base. But has anyone been to this part of Scotland?

I have been to Kircudbright, but apart from scenery do not remember anything there that stands out. At one time we lived in Kilmarnock, a good bit north of there. The secenery is OK, but not outstanding. No doubt someone else has their own ideas, but scenery is a subjective matter. Further up the coast - you may have been there - the Firth of Clyde offers good scenery and easy access to Glasgow.

It's quite a pleasant drive from near the town of Lockerbie out to Stranraer, from where you can catch ferries to Northern Ireland. From Portpatrick you can even SEE Northern Ireland given good visibility.

Personally I think the countryside NW from Glasgow is much nicer.
