I'm traveling with someone who would like to attend one of the "medieval" castle banquets. What experiences have you had? Any thoughts on which location might be most pleasant? Is any one less likely to be inundated with large tour groups? I'd welcome any suggestions.
My husband and I attended the medieval banquet at Bunratty Castle last September and had a great time - you get to have a banquet IN the castle. I mean, how cool is that? Let me first say that I am a total dork and really dig this sort of strange thing. Bunratty castle is actually part of what they call a folk park and the park is really lovely to walk through. They have animals, fake villages set up, gardens, etc. The actors at the banquet sang and played music - yes, totally cheesy, but I loved it! The highlights were the bagpipe players as we left and getting to pet two VERY sweet Irish Wolfhounds that live within the Bunratty Folk Park. There were a lot of tourists of course and also a lot of kids.
Bunratty Castle has been hosting these banquets for a very long time. I have an LP (that stands for long playing record!) from when my grandmother attended a banquet back in the 1960's. She was taken to Bunratty by her nephew who lived in Dublin. Pam
I also attended the banquet at Bunratty when I was there in March. I loved it! The food was great and the atmosphere was fun! We were of course all tourists but there were no big bus groups when we were there, just lots of small groups. Go and Enjoy!
Experienced Bunratty Castle Banquet in October 2008 with a "bus tour" of 50 people. Very touristy event. The food was mediocre. However, performers were very good. Would I return - NO.
My mom went to Bunratty Castle dinner when we were in the area. She enjoyed it. I didn't go, the uber touristy stuff isn't my favorite. I'm sure it was filled with mostly large tour groups. I've seen pictures of it and it looked like 500 people or more in the room.
We did the banquet at Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara. It was a much more intimate setting. The show highlighted poets and musicians from the area, which made it really interesting.
