My mum has just told me she wants to go to a fancy Indian restaurant for her birthday. Despite being an Indian-food loving Londoner I am a bit stumped as I generally just go to restaurants in Asian areas. She fancies one of the famous ones in central London. Help!

According to my friend from India who has family in London and visits there all the time, Tamarind on Queen Street or Zaika on Kensington High Street.

I know these two only by reputation. I have never been to either so check on a site like urbanspoon for reviews.
Benares - the chef has taught a number of classes at Divertimenti
Amaya - Saw a review of this and it looked interesting. I don't think it is particularly traditional.
