Any "must see/do" experiences for auto enthusiasts while in UK?

My wife and I will be touring England, Wales and Scotland this summer and, as an auto enthusiast, I am looking for point of interest of that sort. Maybe museums, restoration shops or things of that nature. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

See if you can get tickets to Silverstone for the F1 Grand Prix - be prepared to push wheelbarrows full of cash for a fantastic experience See if you can snag tickets for the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and its associated hill climb. Visit Coventry Transport Museum. Go to the TT races in the Isle of Man - yeah, I know not 4 wheels (only 2), and not technically UK - but good fun. See if you can get a tour of the Morgan factory in Malvern. Various car clubs, such as varieties of Jaguar, MG, Austin 410s, Austin 7s, etc., meet during the summer at various stately homes. Mini's meets are all over the country. I have a photo of my cousin with his 410 along with about 40 others. Good fun... I'll see if I can remember others...

Beaulieu one of the Treasure Houses of England has an extensive antique car collection. Check the towns that have auto race tracks for restoration shops. Check the National Trust UK site for other leads. Maybe some of the automotive factories have some tours.

Check to see if you can be in the audience for the original BBC show, Top Gear. The Beaulieu National Motor Museum should be on your list. This would be worth the price of admission alone: http://www.beaulieu.co.uk/attractions/bond-in-motion Maybe an auto auction: http://www.autoinsider.co.uk/uk_auctions.php this link provides information on UK auto museums:

Amazed Top Gear's got onto this site! Have a look on you tube. I think ??? Nigel mentioned London to brighton rally before. Can't remember when it's on, but if you get the opportunity it would be a unique experience.

Thank you Claudia and Kathleen. Nice to get the female perspective here!

Thanks again (Susan), but I'm afraid I'll pass on "Top Gear". Not a venue for serious car people, IMHO.

I will second (or third) Beaulieu - we visited, and my husband (who is an auto enthusiast) really loved it.

If you like driving as well as checking out cars in museums, then hit the roads in northern Scotland. Pick up Iain Banks book, Raw Spirit, the Search for the Perfect Dram. It's about the whisky, but it is also about the roads he drives to get to the distilleries. If you can't get all the way to the north there are some great roads in Perthshire over the mountains, or over to the west of Glasgow. My favorites are in the north. The transport museum is newly redone in Glasgow. I haven't been to the new museum, but the old one was fascinating. It's about transport in general and not just trains or cars. Pam

The London to Brighton Classic Car run is November so that won't work for OP. Who says Clarkson, Captain Slow, and the Hamster aren't serious about cars?

@ Claudia and they do perform a public service. The episode this week (spoiler alert - although I think only one of the cars had a spoiler {see what I did there?}) had them showing how a 4 wheel drive Bentley is less expensive and a better deal than a 4 wheel drive Ferrari. How can people say they don't care about cars? And off road wheelchairs? Come on...

And the Hamster has a new show coming to BBC America that is based in the US. I saw something about tanks on a army base and training was involved. ; ) Pam
