Anyone have any tips for best area &\or places to stay in Amsterdam in winter. I´m and older but young at heart traveler. Love people places, live music, and impromtu singing jams with the folks.

I'll second the recommendation of Leidseplein as a good people area. The area is packed with restaurants- for some reason, many are South American-themed., When I visited last year during the Christmas season, there was a temporary ice rink and a few Kerstmarkt stalls. And a previous poster once again showed that he has encyclopedic knowledge of the collective works of Rick Steves and little travel experience. Dam Square is NOT mere minutes from Leidseplein unless your name is Usain Bolt.

Steve writes: "try the Lidesplein area near Dam Square" L eidseplein is not near Dam Square. It's a different section of the city; a twenty minute walk away.

Leidseplein is five trams stops away from Dam Square, 1.5 Kilometers away (just under 1 mile), that's not nearby. And for future refrence, the entrance to Vondelpark is only 400 meters from Leidseplein.

Lesson: Steve writes; Michael travels. And Leidseplein hasn't gotten an inch closer to Dam Square.
