I am looking at cruising the fjords of Norway beginning at Bergen. A Hurtigruten cruise is incredibly expensive. Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative?
Cruise lines will be even more expensive than Hurtigruten. A young woman with cooking and other skills may be able to work her way on a private yacht.
Hurtigruten often has special deals. They just finished one offering 20% off if booking by Sept. 30th for 2012 cruises. Check their website for deals are they are always coming up. Also rates are lower at certain times of year. Also be aware that everything in Norway is expensive and your Hurtigruten fare includes all your meals. There are several major cruiselines beginning to cruise Norway now in the summer months. Again check out deals as they are announcedusually for early booking or last minute cabin closeouts. You could look into a rail pass but the Norwegian rail system is not extensive and you would still need to pay for lodging and food.
Hei hei- Just returned from a 3+ week Scandinavian trip, which included 4 days cruising from Bergen to Lofoten Islands....very nice! We got a senior fare, and our meals were not included, so it was very reasonable. Patsy
If you just want to see fjords, most seacoast towns have day cruises that will take you out and back. You could set up an itinerary to travel to different places and stay in hotels. That would be cheaper.
