How many hours should we allot for bus trips out to Rosslyn Chapel and also to the Britannia, including the visits once there?
A good friend told me to allow about 3-4 hours for visiting Britannia. The city bus takes about 20 minutes from city center to get there.
I don't think that you'll need that much time, unless, as they say on the website you count the visit to the tea room. (Almost every tourist site in Scotland has a tearoom. They are great places for lunch. ) The website itself says to allow and hour and a half, two hours in August. When I visited with my parents several years ago we did the tour and that sounds about right to me. It looks like you can take the bus to Rosslyn Chapel. http://thecms.swanwebsolutions.co.uk/uploads/ROSSLYN/number_15.pdf I've not been so I can't say how long to spend there. Pam
For Rosslyn Chapel, I would think about an 1-1 1/2 hour would be enough time, maybe less, depends on how interesting it is to you. I loved it - I'm a history nut and amateur photog- spent about 1/2 hour just taking pictures of the graveyard markers outside.
Once at Rosslyn allow 1.5-2 hrs any xtra time and there are cafes in town to enjoy. The tours run regularly but one never knows if a bus load will be there bef you.
A couple of hours should be enough once you"re at the Britannia, it's a self-guided tour and you can linger or power through different parts of the ship depending on your interests. We were there in May, no doubt it would take longer with summer crowd. That's without the tearoom or more than a quick turn through the gift shop. Better allow half an hour each way for the bus though.
nancy, I'd suggest leaving at least four hours (and possibly a bit more) for visiting Brittania. While it would be possible to have a reasonably good tour in about 2-3 hours, I found that it's a good idea to plan for the "unexpected". For example, when I was there last year, a number of cruise ships and tour groups happened to all arrive at the same time. Brittania was completely full, so the staff were forced to close the gates for a short time. I decided that would be a good opportunity for a fine hot meal at one of the Italian restaurants in the Mall (to access Brittania, you have to pass through a large Mall). That proved to be a good choice, as the patio in that restaurant provided a great view of the ship for photos. When I went back to the ship, the crowds had thinned out considerably, so I had a very pleasant tour of Brittania. I ran out of time and didn't make it to Roslyn Chapel, so can't offer any comments on that. Happy travels!
Thanks to you all for the good guidance. Will be sure to build in enough time.
