We have a return flight to the U.S. from Dublin that connects via London. The departure time from DUB is 8.40 a.m. Would appreciate any suggestions as to the time that we can expect for security and check-in at the airport given the time of day.

I would arrive very early, especially if your flight is on a weekday. Most of Ireland's flights go from Dublin, not Shannon, so it is very busy and the airport hasn't kept up with the increase in passengers. Our flight was at 10:30 and it was very crowded with long, slow lines. We arrived two hours before our flight and by the time we got through security I barely had time to use the restroom before we boarded.

I've been through the same experience as Sydney. It's very stressful to stand in long lines knowing you have a time limit to be at your gate. I would suggest three hours early. You go through US immigration in Dublin, so you have to add that step to the regular security routine.
