We will be leaving St Ives and touring the northern coast on our way to Bath. We plan to spend one night out before reaching Bath. Any suggestions as to which town to stay in? Do you think that we can have a leisurely day of seeing the sights and then travelling to Bath?

Diane , I think the answer would depend on several things . First , when would you be starting in the am from St. Tves ? Second , how many stops are you planning along the coast and when in the day would you finish sightseeing ? Two years ago my wife and I spent four days seeing some of Cornwall . We ended our last day in Falmouth at about 5:30 pm . Our next destination was around Bath on our way to the Cotswolds . Although we had had a full day , we weren't tired and thus decided to travel as close as we could toward Bath . By about 8:00 weariness started to set in so we called ahead to a Premier inn outside of Bristol to land for the night . I tell you this only to be taken as an example of one way to handle a situation like this . You can tailor your day as your plans dictate . I assume you will have a car and thusly the flexibility to do some planning on the fly. Enjoy Cornwall , we can't wait to go back!!All our best!!!!!!!!!!!!
You might enjoy Glastonbury (abbey ruins and Glastonbury Tor) or Wells (lovely small town with a beautiful cathedral and close). The two towns are very close together and about 3.5 hours from St. Ives.
Heartily second Cynthia's recommendation , particulary for Wells . Great place and the Cathedral is magnificent. If you see it be sure to look at the unique hourglass truss which supports the building at the juncture of the nave and transept .
Wells is great, especially if you can stay at a b&b with view of cathedral.
Dunster- small town in Somerset with a great main road. Talbot Hotel (old coaching inn)
