Greetings. My girlfriend and I are spending 6.5 days in Ireland in August. First timers. We want to do a driving tour but are unsure of where to start, and want to make the most of 6 days and nights. Although I would love to see Dublin, most of the advice I get suggests the western coast of Ireland as the best place to start the driving tour (fly into Shannon). Advice?
Hi Bryan, You might consider flying into Shannon and departing from Dublin or the opposite. That way you would not have to double back and would give you the chance to see both Dublin and the west of Ireland.
I would definitely recommend starting in Shannon and ending in Dublin. Shannon Airport is infinitely easier to get out of, and it's a good chance to get used to driving on the other side, if you've not done it before, before you encounter any traffic. On my first trip we landed in Shannon, and went north as far as the Burren. Then we made a swing across the southern part of Ireland, and up the east coast to Dublin. We had six nights, as well. If you'd like more detailed information about our route, feel free to message me.
My wife and I just completed a two week tour. Six days is very doable. We started in Dublin, but starting in Shannon would also work well. Wherever you start, don't drive in Dublin. There's no need to and the traffic is heavy.
Feel free to post any other questions you might have.
Enjoy your trip!
