Accommo's in Dublin:

Please give opinion as to accommodations in Dublin, and whether it will be worth it in July to spring for bigger bucks$$ near the center, or perhaps shuttle/bus in from outside the center for less. Would appreciate actual "names", too, of known and recommended establishments - Suzanne from Austin

Hostel, B&B, or hotel? Budget or mid-range?

Suzanne,

As Tim noted, it would help to have more info on what type of place you're looking for.

That said, here are a few thoughts. One way to stay in the city center for cheap in the summer is to stay at Trinity College. They offer dorm rooms while students are away. Obviously, this is not luxury accomodations, but they are reasonable clean rooms in a perfect location for exploring the city.

If budget is an issue, you might also try a B&B in the suburb of Dun Laoghaire. It's a nice small town on the harbor south of Dublin. It's about a 15 minute train ride from the city center. There are many good B&Bs in this area; my wife and I stayed at Ophira House and loved it.

Howth is another good suburban option to the north of Dublin.

Our RS tour stays at the Harding Hotel in Dublin. See their website. It is an ideal location.

I booked three nights at the Harding for July. A Double with a bath was just under 300p. I figured it was worth it since with all the pub crawls we wouldn't get much sleep anyway, we'll be in the center of it all, and it will be at the end of our RS tour.

I just returned from Ireland last night. In Dublin we stayed at the Best Western Premier Academy Plaza Hotel. I got a great deal (stay 2 nights get the 3rd night free) online through Booking.com. The location was excellent. It is just off upper O'Connell St. and easily walkable to Temple Bar, etc. The Air Link bus from the airport dropped us off just outside the entrance. The hop on-hop off bus stop is directly across the street.

Karen, could you clarify "300p"? Euros? Dollars? Per night or for all three nights?

Susanne, we just returned from Dublin and can really recommend the St Augustine Serviced Aprtments. They're fully furnished 1,2,or 3 bedroom apartments, less than 1 year old, located at the corner of Oliver Bond and St. Augustine streets. They're approximately a 15 minute to Trinity college and one block from the Brazen Head and O'Shea's pubs. We stayed in a 1-BR apartment that cost (all fees and taxes included) $118 USD per day, or 89E at a 1.33 xchange rate. Having breakfast in the apartment, with gourment dinners from Marks and Spencer, made it a very cost-efficient visit.

We just returned on Friday from Ireland and we also stayed at the Harding Hotel. I can't say enough good things about it! We literally looked out the window of our room to Christ Church Cathedral. You could walk to all of the sites within minutes from here.

What about the Gresham? It was always very nice. We used to stay there until Flight Crews were no longer welcome.
