A week in Scotland......

Me again...we have our plane tickets now and a tentative itinerary...

Day 1, 2 London
Day 3-8 Cotswold village (not sure which one yet)
Day 9 York
Day 10-16 Scotland village

We are doing a stay at a cottage/appartment in Scotland for 6 nights. We are thinking somewhere between or close to both Glasgow and Edinburgh, as we fly out of Glasgow. We may do a one night trip up to Inverness, or just do it as a really long day trip. We again want to do a cottage as we have two teenage boys and it works best to stay in one place. We really don't mind driving, in fact it is our favourite part. Any suggestions on good day trips and a homebase?

Thanks!!!!

Stirling would be a good compromise betwen Glasgow and Stirling and also puts you on the A9 for going north through Perth to Inverness. You can get to Loch Lomand easily, making a round trip through Callendar down by Luss and back via Alexandria. Getting to ST Andrews and the Fife coast (visit the fishing villages: Ely, Anstruther, Crail, etc..

Sorry cannot goive you ay leads for a cottage, but Google and you may find something. Have a great trip to my homeland!

Aviemore is a nice village in the Caringorm Mts. It is between Inverness and Edinburgh and not unreasonably far from Glasgow. There are lots of holiday cottages for rent in the area (I've seen the notices in the "estate agent's" office at the train station. We really enjoy staying in Aviemore as there is lots to do. There is a restored steam train, the funicular up Mt. Caringorm, hikes up the mt. or around the lake/river on Rothmurchie estate, canoeing, horseback riding, a reindeer reserve, etc. We usually stay at the Caringorm hotel across from the station. It has a marvelous (and relatively inexpensive)resturant. There is also a microbrewery that gives tours and samples (hubby really likes their Golden Caringorm and Blessed Thistle beers- they do about 6). You are not far from Blair Athol, and there are lots of GREAT distilleries within short drives (or train/bus rides). You would be close enough to Inverness to not have to spend the night, and could even do Isle of Sky/Eliean Donan on a long day trip- or stay overnight on Skye.

I would stay further away from Glasgow and Edinburgh. Toni has a good suggestion with Aviemore. Other places to consider would be Pitlochry or Aberfeldy or Dunkeld. These are all in central Scotland.

I don't have any leads on cottages but I wanted to chime in that I loved both Stirling and Pitlochery (which we did as day trips from Edinburgh) and am looking forward to going back and spending more in those areas.
