Any suggestions for covering the Collision Damage Waver in Ireland? Should I get a WORLD Master Card? Thanks. Barb
You could get one, but it won't do any good - - read the fine print that comes with all the trash that says 'except in Italy, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, and IRELAND'. There's two ways to cover cdw in Ireland: the rental outfit's and third-party. Without going into the logic, I would't touch the latter.
Speaking from experience, no credit card insurance will cover you in Ireland, no matter what they say or what you have in print. You're best off, as Ed says, just taking the Super CDW offered by the rental desk, no matter what it costs. There are just too many ways they can find to deny a claim any other way, and fighting with them from an ocean away is difficult, if not impossible.
This cover is from about 15 to 24 Euro per day depending on car and company, most sites don't show this option, I ended up emailing a couple, Thrifty, was one. Its payable at the desk.
regards
Thanks for all the suggestions. We will "bite the bullet"and get Super CDW, supposedly 12euros/. We have a decent deal through Kemwel using Hertz on the tiniest car available. Those country roads can be soooo narrow.
Barb, buy a supplemental insurance plan that covers the deductable (excess) that is not covered by your rental agency, and all of the other fees that you will be charged if you are in a collision. Our friends lost up to $2000 when their car got wrecked in Ireland; there are a ton of extra fees that are levied, and not covered, even if you buy CDW from the rental agency. We are looking into some of the plans that we found in a helpful article in the London Daily Mail: "Better still are excess-waiver policies offered by specialist insurers - www.moneymaxim.co.uk offers a price-comparison service of the ten or so firms that have sprung up in recent years, and the cheapest cover comes out at under £2 a day." http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-2002693/Holiday-car-hire-How-steer-clear-potholes.html
If you buy a third-party supplemental plan it may not be acceptable to the agency from which you rent the car - - something that would be rather hard to coordinate in full when you're trying to pick a rental. If you get the insruance from the agency, you'll know the two are linked. Having to pay a few thousand extra bucks is probably the difference between having had cdw or super cdw. You'd be surprised at the number of people who don't know exactly what they had. Super cdw is a walk-away - - the only exception I've ever seen is for windshields.
Ed is right. That's why I suggested Super CDW in my first post. Yes, it adds to your rental cost, but in the case of a problem it is totally worth the price. Some third party insurers don't cover anyone who, for example, does not live in the UK. You have to read the fine print carefully.
I called my credit card companies and none of them have insurance coverage in Ireland. We made our car rental reservation thru EasyTour Ireland. They do have a website (www.EasyTourIreland.com) but because I don't know very much about their company, I called their toll free number on a sunday, left a message and was surprise to get a return call in 2 hours and Conn was very helpful answering the questions I have. It had the best price compared to other car rental company and booking directly to Hertz. They use Hertz and if you go to the website, you would see Hertz. Super CD is included in the prize. I read good reviews in TripAdvisor about EasyTour. Our trip to Ireland is in May. A lot of research and changes in itinerary. Plan B is also in place if plan A does not work.
Are you SURE YOU ACTUALLY HAVE Super CDW??? I went to the website where it STATED that Super CDW was included but when I got redirected to the Hertz site the car came up with No CDW coverage. Does it really show that coverage on your print out? I was told by Kemwel that it had to be purchased onsite in Ireland.
I also think, as Barb says, that you can only purchase Super CDW at the rental counter, not in advance.
Hi Barb, We booked with HERTZ directly and was given a higher price. After reading good review from former user in TripAdvisor. I went to www.EasyTourIreland got the office number in Utah to know more about it since I was a little skeptic about it. They verified that SCDW is included and walk us through the reservation. The print out shows that SCDW, Personnel Accident Insurance.Personal Effects Coverage is included. We pick up the vehicle in the Hertz location in Dublin and return would be in the airport location without extra charge. For 9 days it cost 239 Euros. It would be good if you call the Utah office and ask all the questions you have in mind. We did not know about this company until I read about it in the Tripadvidsor forum.
We are hoping that everything goes well. For back up we kept the 1st Hertz booking. I will give an update after our trip.
Oops Sorry. They did not have a toll free number but they do have a Salt Lake City, Utah number.
Agnes, for your peace of mind, do make sure when you're at the counter in Dublin that you are indeed fully, completely covered by what is printed as "SCDW". I too am under the impression that Super CDW can only be bought in Ireland, at the time of the signing of the rental contract - even for a pre-paid rental. We are going in June.
I'll side with the counter crowd until the end of days.
Uncle Ed, and Nancy, I respectfully have to disagree with you. Many, if not most, auto rental agengcies in the EU DO NOT cover tires, wheels, or windshields, even if you have Super CDW. But, many supplemental plans DO cover these items, and they cover people from the US, and other countries. In fact they specifically request that you provide your country of residence. You are correct that the rental agencies probably will not honor these third party agencies; from Agnes' Hertz agency "If you decide to use an external Excess Insurance policy to cover the limited liability please understand that Hertz is in no way party to this agreement. We will require authorization on your credit card to cover the excess and in the event of an incident will bill your card for the full amount on return. The onus is with you to recoup this charge from the provider." And that is exactly what I plan to do if I damage my Auto Europe Avis rental while we are in Ireland for 9 days. I will cover the US $1900 rental agency Excess with my VISA, and then deal with the third party agency. My nine day Opel Corso 4 door rental costs $276 US; total. A super inclusive supplemental policy only costs around $30 US. And tires, wheels, windshield, lost keys, locking myself out, putting in the wrong fuel, daily re-imbursement if I can't drive the car, towing and recovery, having to return the car for illness, additional drivers and personal accident insurance, etc. are all included. For around $300 US I am completely covered. Can't beat that!
What did I say that are disagreeing with, Steve?
Nancy, my bad. I should have been a little clearer. The statements; "you can only purchase Super CDW at the rental counter, not in advance." Now there are options to buy your Super CDW in advance, on the internet, thru these secondary sellers; which is a pretty new thing.
I just returned from a wonderful trip to Ireland and will vouch for Easytourireland and Conn. Everything was covered and upfront beforehand. Conn, himself, was genuinely helpful on the telephone. Luckily, I did not have any accident, but felt that 'all the bases were covered'.
