Toll roads

We plan on driving a loop around half of Ireland. Route will be Dublin south making stops in Kilkenney, Kinsale, Dingle, Galway, Trim, and return to Dublin for return flight home. Do I need to pre-purchase toll card? Can I find this at airport? Since I am arriving early on a Friday morning, should I find the nearest Bank of Ireland to exchange US dollar? Want to save as much time when I get there to enjoy the sites of Ireland. Thank you to Rick Steves' for this forum.

If you have a Visa or Mastercard-branded debit card with a US bank, you can get cash at any ATM in Ireland. There are several ATM's in the Dublin airport; you won't have any problem finding one. You can pay any tolls you encounter in cash. You can find all the official information on Irish roads here: http://www.nra.ie/

The only toll road I encountered among all of the places you listed is the ring road around Dublin itself, so you might have to pay one toll but probably no more than that. Depending on the route you take, you might not encounter any at all.

Todd it is not always that easy. On the M50 round Dublin the tolls are moniored with cameras and electronic transponders. Only locals with high use will have the latter. Your licence plate is recorded and you pay the toll. The easiest way to do it is over the Internet. You access it, input your licence plate and your credit card info and that is it. You have a limited time to do this - I think it is 48 hrs, but could be less. If you miss that, the fee increases considerably. If you have a rental car, they will bill your credit card eventually if you do not pay. Get all the details at: http://www.myguideireland.com/blog/paying-tolls-when-driving-in-ireland/

Check with the car rental company about the Dublin Toll Road. Most are adding it into the rental fee already. Hertz did the last time I rented in Dublin.

It's not a bad as it sounds. You can pay your toll all over the place at places with a PayZone sign. (Grocery stores, newstands, gas stations, etc). It looks like the logo in the top right corner of this:http://www.payzone.ie/outlets/. You have until eight pm the next day to pay the couple of euros, it doubles the next day, and zooms after that. Once you've spotted one, you'll see thousands. It might be the size of a credit card sign by a door handle or it might be something that 18 x 18...watch for the colors and you'll find it.

We did as Ed says for the tolls. The only toll roads were around Dublin. My husband just went in and paid the toll the next morning when he stopped to buy a newspaper. Hopefully Hertz lets you pre-pay. We used Budget and they did not offer it. My husband bought some Euros at our local commercial bank before we left. Check with your bank. Be sure to let you bank know where you are going and the dates you are away, so they won't question ATM use. Be sure you pin is 4 numbers and not any letters. ATM's in Europe only have #'s in all that I saw. We used ATM's when we needed more cash. We used credit cards for car rental, hotels and bed and breakfasts, dinner, etc.

There is a toll road going to Galway - M6..but it has toll booths. For the M50, here is a link for e-flow.. http://www.eflow.ie/ The M3 motorway through Dublin to Co Meath can be avoided by going the N3.

"Be sure you pin is 4 numbers and not any letters." Doesn't matter if your PIN is letters. All you have to do is learn the corresponding number keys at one of your home bank's ATMs.
