Liability insurance is mandatory in Ireland and is included in all rentals.

Half the fees for renting a car are actually the car and on quarter to half is the added CDW insurance. Watch out for the deductable, because for a few dollars more the deductable is covered too. Most all credit cards do not cover Ireland. You just have to buy it for peace of mind.

I suggest you get the full "super CDW" and not have to worry about it. Price it as you get car prices. It seems to vary widely. Without the "super," you'll be at risk of being one of the persecuted posters here that didn't buy it and feel like they were ripped off by their car company. They probably were but you'll be ripped off by a known amount if you buy the full coverage. However, even the full coverage doesn't cover damage to tires.

CDW usually comes with a hefty deductible, around 1100-1500 euro. The super CDW covers that. You can either get it through the rental company or through a 3rd party company, like dailyexcess.com. It's cheaper through a 3rd party, but you have to pay the deductible if there's any damage and get reimbursed by the insurance company.

We always get the super cdw-have had to use it twice-not that we are bad drivers-but roads are narrow-scratches are common from hedgerows-also had a tire get shredded from brick wall when someone passed us taking more than their share of the road ! It gives you peace of mind .

Either way, definitely get something to cover the deductible. You don't want to get a scratch on the car your first day and spend the rest of your vacation worrying about that big deductible that you're going to have to pay. Not worth it.

Definitely get the super CDW - no worries and not that expensive considering the alternative.

Buy all the insurance you can. Super CDW, etc. It is cheaper than having to pay for damages sustained from bushes scrubbing the side of the car, door dents in parking lots, etc. Speaking of that (door dents, boot lip dints), BE SURE to walk about the car and indicate on the rental form ALL DENTS, SCRAPES, missing wheel covers, scratches on the boot lip, door sill, under the door, scratches under the passengers and drivers door, tears in the seats, tears in the floor mats, dirty floor mats, windscreen chips, turn signal and head light lenses missing, chiped, broken, cigarette smell and or burns, etc. In other words, everything that makes the car not perfect, like it came from the factory, list it or be prepaired to pay for it when you turn it in, no matter how miniscule you think it is. "Oh, see that branch scratch on the side of the car, that will be a 500 pound respray charge. . .. ." which is billed to your cc.
