I understand that many stores, restaurants, etc. shut down on holidays (e.g. Boxing Day). I am planning on flying out from Kentucky on either December 25th or 26th. and arriving in Birmingham, UK on either the 26th or 27th. I have found tickets to be much cheaper if I leave on Christmas, but wasn't sure if I would even be able to check into a hotel (previously booked) or utilize transportation upon my arrival on Boxing Day. I am content in hanging out at the hotel during the holiday (I'm sure it would be good to get over the jet lag), especially if it gives me an extra travel day that week. Any suggestions or tips?

More is open on Boxing Day than Christmas Day, but be prepared for a very restricted train and bus service. Taxis will also be more exensive and more difficult to get hold of.
The hotel will certainly be open as will pubs and a lot of restaurants.
