5+ hour Dublin layover - time to leave the airport?

I'm headed to the UK in June and have a 5.5-hour layover in Dublin before heading on to Heathrow. I've been to Dublin before, but it would be nice to stretch my legs in the National Museum or something. Do I have enough time to take a quick run into the city, or should I play it safe and stay in the airport?

If you leave the airport, you'll have to go through security again, yes? Whereas otherwise, you could stay in the gates area, since you're connecting? I'm thinking it will take you a good hour to get into Dublin, and an hour back, and then you'll need to be at least an hour early for your flight. That leaves time to go through customs (30 minutes at least?), which leaves about 1.5 hours of museum time. It depends on how much you like a challenge! Personally, I'd be too nervous about missing my flight. But that's just me! I could kill an hour browsing the duty-free shop in Dublin, personally. ;)

Even if connecting to the UK immigration formalities would happen in Dublin, so there is no timesaving of this by staying at the airport. There would in theory be enough time to travel into Dublin and back again, but there would be little time there before heading back

Thanks -- I guess I'll just find a corner to drink a Guinness and take advantage of the free wifi.
