Yes, we will have spent the previous 2 weeks in Norway. Looking for ideas in this region. Tusen takk!

The southeast of Sweden has some really interesting areas. Kalmar is worth a day, good castle to explore, lovely town with a lively public square. Try the Frimurare hotel and ask for a superior room. Lovely. Right next to the train station too. A day in the glass country touring the glass factories is fun. The Kosta Boda glass blowing is good, but the place is dominated by the stores. We also had fun at the moose park. If you have Swedish roots, stop by the Emigrant museum in Ulvesta. Karlskrona on the sea coast has a wonderful maritime museum, good for several hours of your time, and the church in the city square is beautiful. Also check out the Admiral's Church, a huge wooden church by the Swedish Naval Academy. There are other towns like Kristianstad in the area too. Rent a car and go exploring. Safe travels.

Also in the south: Ystad (charming town), Kasaberga (stones on hill in shape of a ship - like Stonehenge), Kivik (5000 year old grave), Glimminhus Castle (medieval). Some beautiful coastline and scenery in the south. We drove it from Stockholm to Copenhagen.

My wife and I just returned from essentially the trip you are asking about: 4 days in Copenhagen, 5 days in Stockholm, and 5 days with a rental car between them. We really enjoyed the drive. Five days is plenty of time to meander and just enjoy the Swedes and the countryside. I second all the recommendations in the other posts, although I'm guessing the emigrant museum Keith was recommending is the one in Vaxjo. It's worth it even if you don't have Swedish ancestors. You may be aware of this already: it is significantly cheaper to rent (or drop, depending on your direction) the car in Malmo and take the short train ride to Copenhagen, rather than involve Denmark in the rental. The drop charge is very high if you take the car out of the country you rented it in.

I love all the suggestions, & can't wait to start researching! It sounds like we will need a car, yes?? Auto Europe - Stockholm to Malmo (4 days), train to Copenhagen. $371. $113. drop off fee $484.=$121./day Does this seem reasonable, or are there other options/ideas? Mange tak/Tack sa mycket-

I rented through Auto Europe, which set up an Avis rental of a 4-door compact for $358, which I paid when I made the reservation in April. On the day of the rental I then paid the drop-off charge and Swedish tax (MOMS), which totaled 625 Krona, or $97. So our total was $455, or $91/day. Your higher estimate now from Auto Europe may be a result of a fancier car and/or the fact that you're making a reservation with less lead time. I highly recommend Auto Europe. Here's the really sweet part of the rental: Avis gave us a Honda Insight hybrid for this rate, complete with built-in navigation. We got nearly 50 mpg on the trip, in a country where gas was about $8.30 per gallon. Have a great trip.
