How to get there ?

Due to nervous nellie spouse who doesn't want to drive Ireland, we are now " training" Ireland. I'm trying to find a way to get to Cashel to see the "Rock", but so far looks like only way is car out of Cork. Any ideas from you well-traveled folks ? Thanks, Mary

No matter how you get there, please make sure you get to Cashel Rock. We just happened to stop by to see it last November, and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Ireland. It's a beautiful place ... lovely Celtic crosses in the cemetery around it...well worth a trip to see it !!!

Mary,

For driving in Ireland, a GPS unit (along with a good Map) would be a really good idea. Some of the smaller roads are not well marked, and in some cases (especially in the Gaeltacht areas), the English portions of the signs are spray painted over, leaving only the Gaelic portion visible. Renting an automatic would be a good idea, especially for a first visit.

With the narrow roads and driving on "the correct side of the road", it's a good idea not to rush. Police cars will be labeled with the word "Garda" (short for Garda Siochana) so if you see one, you'll know what it is.

You might enjoy reading www.visitireland.com/planning/driving.asp for some tips.

Cheers!

Have GPS/Europe in hand and have automatic on reserve in Dublin. Thanks for other info on roads, police, etc. Any advice is welcome !

You will find that it will cost extra for an extra driver, unlike when you rent a car here.

Nancy is right. It was quite a bit more to add a driver. When we found that out we decided that one driver would do. I am usually the driver in those situations. My husband was supposed to navigate. I was very thankful to have a GPS. It was a marriage saver for sure. Having an automatic will make the driving easier. Have a great time!
