We've visited Cornwall three times. Recommendations: Choose one area on the north coast for a few days, then move on to another area on the south coast. We used the Headlands Hotel near Tintagel and Housel Bay Hotel near the Lizard. We choose those two, after an extensive search, because they were reasonably priced hotels with restaurants, located right by the cliffs with good sea views. Places to visit: neolithic sites in Penwith (Men-en-Tol and the Merry Maidens, plus others), Zennor, Mousehole, Tintagel, Lost Gardens of Heligan, Dartmoor and Jamaica Inn, Dozmary Pool, Restormel Castle, and many charming villages tucked into coves. I would avoid the larger cities--too much traffic, too little atmosphere.

In Penzance visit Minnack theatre and St.Michaels Mont (go in the morning so you can walk across the causeway to the castle). Also St. Ives is worth a visit.

Thanks so much for your replies. Is it fairly easy
driving around Cornwall?
Clovelly sounds interesting - have you been there?

We were there in the spring and found Cornwall to be charming. One of the attractions in the south is to simply walk the cliff paths - save some time for it. When we were there traffic was light and driving was easy.
