We live in Germany and would like to make a weekend trip to visit these beautiful gardens. We are on a tight budget and I need some recommendations regarging cheap hotel/pension for a Friday/ Saturday night.

We just stayed a night at the Citizen M at Schipol Airport. 69 Euro for a Night for a clean nice room. Easy connection to the gardens. Also easy connection into Amsterdam.

Maybe a little helpful hint so you can widen your search. You can easily reach the gardens by public transportation from Amsterdam, Leiden, Haarlem, Delft, Den Hague and Rotterdam.
And then I looked a little closer and saw where you live... which probably means you have an afiliation with a certain large governmental organization, and you probably have your own car readily available.... But just to ask, have you checked the USO office? They might possibly offer a long day's bus tour.
