3-Star Hotels in London's South Hampton Row Area?

A seasoned traveler friend has suggested booking a 3-star hotel in London's South Hampton Row area the first and final nights of an October-November trip to London (via Heathrow). I did, as suggested, a Google search on "www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/" site using "hotel" and "South Hapton Row" but didn't find a previous question about that.

So, help! I would appreciate helpful suggestions concerning 3-star hotels in the South Hampton Row area, transportation for two between the hotel and Heathrow (a train was mentioned) and any other tips and considerations you may have for a first-time visit to London.

I see that private car is recommended vs. taxi (saw no train mentioned).

Also, we plan to do some sightseeing for a few days upon arrival and, likely, before departure. Would appreciate thoughts concerning if another area for a hotel (easier on the budget ones!) would be better. Are scheduled to arrive Heathrow shortly after noon.

Have been told to go to the train station upon arrival in European cities to book a hotel rather than reservations, other than the first and final nights.

Thank you.
