I live in Heidelberg, Germany and have 20 days from 16 December to January 4th. I can't decide where are the best areas to visit, East, West, North or South. I thought about Eastern Europe first, (Prague, Budapest) or maybe Great Britain. Any thoughts?
You gave no spending limits so if I were you, I would look at Australia. Warm and sunny that time of year. Also, Central and South America would be appealing. Children have been to Costa Rica and loved it.
good point. Since I live in Germany I'm going to stay in Europe. There is alot I haven't seen yet.
I'm really interested in Eastern Europe at the moment. With 20 days you could do Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and end up in Istanbul. On the flip side, you could do Spain and spend a week in Morocco. We did 2 weeks in Morocco two years ago and loved it.
Have you previously been to any places in Europe? Are you looking for something warmer or would be okay with the colder weather?
Maybe this: London-Paris-Amsterdam-Berlin-Home or Berlin-Prague-Budapest-Vienna-Munich-Home.
There's always the Holy Land. Where better to be at Christmastime than Nazareth, Jerusalem and Bethlehem. The weather is usually mild, at least some sunny days, and little or no rain.
Eastern Europe would be our choice. We loved Poland (it has the added charm of being about half as expensive as Germany!!!). Budapest is a magnificent city and should not be missed by anybody who has the opportunity to visit it. We assume that you have been to Sicily, as you mentioned northern climes when giving examples of where you might go. If you havent been, perhaps you would enjoy the relative warmth there .
What are your interests? That might help narrow down recommendations.
Personally, I LOVE the UK and 20 days would give you time to do some wonderful stuff. Let us know more and we'll gladly "push" our personal favorites!
Yes, you have to give us more information. Edinburgh Scotland is wonderful place to spend New Years Eve and as Toni says there are lots of other wonderful places to visit in the UK. London alone can be a week or more! Bath, York, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and maybe even skiing in the Cairngorms. ; )
Pam
thanks for all the response. I made the jump and got a ticket to London. I will stay there until the 19th and then to a castle hotel in Bath for 4 days. And from there to Edinburgh. Got a hotel close to Prince street. Not sure what to do after Edinburgh. I thinking of taking a train to London, staying overnight and then a train to Paris.
While you are in Scotland, why not stay a little longer. Take the train to Aviemore- lots to do there- ski, hike, etc. Then train to Inverness. Then maybe train down the west coast or through the midlands. Cardiff Wales is a great city to visit. Then over to London and maybe finish up in Paris.
Bath for 4 days??? What are you going to do there, I didn't think Bath would take that long?
I have to agree with Elaine- We do Bath as a day trip from London and I never felt the desire to spend more than 1 day there. I'd put the time into London, Scotland or even ( gasp! help me, I never thought I'd say it) Paris.
I'd probably head to Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava then up to Prague. If you have any time left you could continue through Dresden to Berlin (and Potsdam).
Alternatively, 20 days would make a great trip to the British Isles but since you specifically mentioned Prague and Budapest, I thought I'd stick with that.
