17 days in England

Early October together with my wife (we are early 30ths) we are going for 17 days in England. I would like to spend 6 days in London where I will fly back to Malta. Now I want to see what other base can I use up in the North were I can visit nice places and scenery. I was thinking of York and another base, but cannot find what it could be. We love scenery, museums, history and culture. So for now on my plan is York and London, but I need another base in the North. As we do not drive while abroad it should have good public transport (trains and buses). Any help?

You're looking to divide 11 days between York and somewhere else in the north (maybe 9 days if you're counting your Malta-London travel days in the 17). You could easily spend 3-4 days seeing York and maybe a day trip to Whitby or the train across the moors or Castle Howard or some such. Your non-York base needs good train and bus service for getting there and for day trips outside. Edinburgh seems like the obvious choice, essy to reach and plenty to see and do. There are bus and van tours of the highlands from there, if you want that scenery without driving. We loved Durham and Hadrian's Wall, but a couple of days would suffice. I know there's train service to Durham but don't know how convenient to York or Edinburgh. If you don't want to go as far as Scotland, you might consider Newcastle as your second base, with things to see there plus day trips to Durham and the Wall. There's a bus (the AD 122) between Newcastle and Carlisle specifically for Wall touring, stopping at all the major sights along the way. If you don't want to tackle Edinburgh, you might want to add a day in London, where you could easily fill more time. But if you'be been there before you might have seen a lot already. Yours is a good problem to have, compared with all the people on this board who are trying to fit a dozen cities into a couple of weeks.

Well Reuben, I should have waited for your seocnd post before going on about Edinburgh. Think maybe Newcastle after York. I haven't been to Liverpool but I've heard the slavery museum is very good (so to speak) and of course if you're a Beatles fan there's much to see.
