1 night in Edinburgh

We are spending one night in Edinburgh. I would like a suggestion on a four star hotel that is central to the sights. I would like to stay in a boutique style hotel(not an international boring one). Any suggestions?

I have three suggestions for you to explore. First, I had a friend who stayed at the Scotsman a few years ago. They loved it. It is near the Royal Mile mid-way between the Castle and Holyrood. It used to be the home of the local newspaper The Scotsman. My second suggestion would be to look into the Witchery. It's very small, but I've heard that it's very romantic and the food is totally fantastic. It's on the Royal Mile right near the Castle. My third suggestion is The George Hotel. This is a classic hotel in New Town. My parents honeymooned there many, many, many years ago and impressed the heck out of our Scottish relatives. It's recently been redone. It too has a great location. Sadly, I've not stayed at any of these, but when my ship comes in, I will have to draw straws to figure out which one comes first.

We always stay at the Royal British- it is across the street from Waverly station and a perfect walk to the sites. It is more a 3 star than a 4 star, but the breakfasts are great and the location is well worth it.

The Caledonian is certainly a big hotel, but when we stayed there we reserved a room with a view of the castle. It was midsummer night and at 11 P.M. we watched the lone piper parading up and down the ramparts, playing "Scotland the Brave." Definitely worth every penny; a sight we will never forget.

Julie, don't know if this is what you have in mind, but we discovered The Victorian Townhouse on some hotel rating site and are staying there in September for 3 nights. thevictoriantownhouse.co.uk website, makes it look fabulous, and our communication with the owner reinforces that. We were disappointed by RS's recommendations of only Royal Mile expensive impersonal hotels or Dalkeith Road B&Bs. We wanted to be within walking distance of the Royal Mile, but wanted a reasonable and charming place. The Victorian Townhouse looks like just what we wanted.

We just returned from a week in Edinburgh. We stayed at the Marriott near the Edinburgh airport. It is about a 40 minute walk to Haymarket but a 15 minute bus ride on bus 100( express bus). We enjoyed the 6 nights that we stayed there.

The Edinburgh castle is very impressive .
