1 Day layover in Dublin

How's the local public transportation in Dublin? We are planning on staying at a hotel where there is transportation to and from the Airport and wanted to know if there is adequate public transportation to get around and sight see for the one day. Also, if anyone has an idea of an itinerary for 1 day in Dublin it would be appreciated. Thanks

Most all the sites within Dublin are walkable. There is also a useful hop on/off tourist bus that does a circuit off all the sites.

If you haven't booked accommodation, the Hotel Isaacs is right opposite the Bus Station, where you will be dropped off by the airport shuttle. We were very happy with our stay there. About a 12 minute walk to Grafton Street

The hop on, hop off bus is a good option. You could ride it around once to get the whole experience, then use it as transportation to the places you want to go back to.

When I did one day in Dublin my itinerary was:

Trinity College/Book of Kells (first thing in the morning so there was no line)

Grafton St/Temple Bar area

National Museum (to see the gold collection)

Georgian House tour at 29 Lower Mount St

Everything was walkable. I had visited Kilmainham Gaol the previous afternoon on my way into town. I think it's well worth a visit, so you might substitute that for the National Museum to fit it into your day.

Public tranportation is good.

I really enjoyed the historical walking tour offered by the Trinity College history graduates. The young woman who led my tour was just terrific. I thought it was a great way to see the old part of Dublin and to learn some Irish history. The info is on the website below.

The airport shuttle makes the rounds to several of the major hotel clusters in town several times a day. Here's the website, so you can see which hotels it services:

If I had one day in Dublin:
Start at Trinity College and the Book of Kells
Tour Kilmanheim (spelling??sorry no book available to check) Jail-interesting history. Be sure you read up a little on the history of the uprising. It is not within walking distance, but you can take a bus out there.
Tea and scones at Bewleys-then walk up and aground Grafton Street.
Walk up to the Post office (site of the uprising) and The Remembrance Garden
Eat dinner at O'shea's Merchant Pub and enjoy the dancing there or head over to Temple Bar area for Trad. Wish I was going with you!!

There light rail that goes out to the jail. My husband and I waited for a bus and either we were on the wrong corner or it never came. AFTER walking all the way to the jail from downtown Dublin (in the rain!!) we were told at the jail to go north a few blocks and get the light rail back to town. It was a quick trip back on the light rail to town to catch the train to our B&B in Dun Laoghaire.
I can't remember what it was called but I'm sure you can Google it.
I wish I was going too!! If you can get to Leo Burdock's fish and chips up by Christ Church for lunch you can take it to the park behind Dublin Castle. You can walk to most of the sights you want to see.
