I am going to Great Britain in June. As part of my trip we will be in Edinburgh 2.5 days/3 nights and London the same. Between Edinburgh and London I have planned a .5day/night stop in York. I am traveling my train with a BritRail Pass. Is it worth the stop off in York or is it better to say another day in Edinburgh (with side trips to Stirling or the Highlands) and catch the night train to London? I've read great things about York but I don't know if I will see much for the time/expense of a stop-over. Thanks, Fran C
It is worth more than a stop. We spent three days there and would have loved to spend another three days. Great museums, a rich history dating to the Romans, a rail center, etc. Check a guide book.
omg-YES!! Two and a half for Edinburgh should do it. A day probably isn't enough for the highlands, and Stirling is sweet but not worth a day, but York? I totally agree with the last post.
To add to my last comments, take the walk with the volunteer guides, they are wonderful and will get you to many things worth seeing. Check with TI for where to meet them. (see Rick's comments in his guides). Spend some time at the Minster and you will have a good half day. Yorvik Viking Center is interesting but you may not have time for it.
We've done a similar stop over several times. Well worth it! If you catch an early train out of London (8:00- 9:30 ish) you can be in York for an early lunch, then have the afternoon to explore the Shambles, the market, and all the lovely shops! We enjoyed the Jorvik museum- it's a little bit hokey, but fun and educational. The Minster is also worth a look. We like to stay at the Royal York Hotel. It is attached to the train station and only a short walk to the main part of the town. It also has a lovley small garden of its own.
If you can, eat at Gert and Henry's. It is in a half-timber house at the edge of the market and the Shambles. Great food. I've had their roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and their sauteed chicken. Both YUMMIE! Hubby loves their fish and chips. And they give you a homemade piece of soft toffee with the check :-)
Yes. You will have time for the cathedral (Minster), Shambles, museum of trains.
York- the Minster; Shambles; Walk the walls; generally wander anywhere within the walls. Absolutely worrth it- probably even higher value than Edinburgh in my opinion. And if you squeeze another day, get out on the york shire moors by car for a day
Fran, There was once a time when I thought I could happily end my days in York. I still love it and believe any time there is time well spent. I hope you can see your way clear to spending more than .5 day there. I'd go to the Minster because I love it and to the Castle Museum. If I had even more time I'd add the Railroad Museum, walk some of the wall and stop for a little something to keep body and soul together at Bettys. Staying the night? A ghostly walk.
York is one of my favorite towns in Britain. It may BE my favorite, so yes, even a 1/2 day there is worth it. Personally, I would drop a day in Edinburgh and add it to York. However, you'll still relish that 1/2 day/night. Walk the wall, wander the Shambles (this section is the origin of our term), experience the Minster, visit the Castle Museum (you may be pressed for time one this one, but it is one of the best museums in Europe, IMO), and most certainly take some tea at Betty's. Like Laurel said, if you spend the night, take a ghost walk. They're not those goofy, hokey ghost walks, but ones that explain the eerie history and strange occurrences of York in times past. Good fun in the evening. Plus, they start and end at a pub...
York is great. In a half day, I'd focus on the Minster, the shambles and walk some of the wall.
