Winter accommodations

I'm planning to travel around eastern europe this winter (Prague, Krakow, Budapest) and am curious about the availability of accommodations that time of year. Is it pretty safe to just show up without a reservation and find a variety of available accommodations? Also, any opinions on travelling in the winter would be helpful. I live on the Olympic Peninsula, so I'm not discouraged by dreary weather but will I be missing out on some important sights?

Actually Forks is more north than Ottawa. The climate is milder in Forks not because of lattitude but it has more to do with nearby ocean. I agree that climate in Prague, Krakow, Budapest resembles more Ottawa climate than climate in Forks.
