My husband, two teenage sons and I are taking the Rick Steves Turkey tour this June. When the tour ends we are going to take the ferry to Samos for a few days. I wondered where on the island people recommended to stay? It seems like to really see the island and have the flexibility to explore you should rent a car? Any suggestions on which town/village to stay in and if a car is needed would be great!! Also, which beaches are favorites?

We also followed our Rick Turkey tour in May 2006 with a delightful few days on Samos. The info from 2004 on this site is still mostly good::>> http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/greece/samos.htm We stayed at the friendly family run Hotel Helen four blocks from the ferry dock in Samos Town. One day with a car took us around to neat deserted Posidonian beach near Pythagoria (be sure to draw a triangle in the sand) and up to the hilltop Loukas Taverna in picture perfect village of Manoloates. Can also recommend the Garden Cafe in Samos Town.Enjoy!
