Where to stay for one night in Split?

I will be spending 12 days in Croatia this coming July. We are only spending one night in Split, before heading to Hvar, but would like recommendations for places to stay that are centrally located as we will not have a car. Thank you!

We had a car in Split so we drove around until we found a home with a sign "zimmer" in the yard.

Go to the RR station and ask the tourist information office where to find a safe, clean room in the central district.

Last July, we used one of Rick's picks--Villa Ana. It's a small (5 rooms) modern hotel--moderately priced, clean, comfortable AND air conditioned which was wonderful during our hot spell. Our room was bright with a pristine bathroom. The hotel is about a 5 minute walk to the Old Town and about 12 minutes from the bus station and the ferries. Breakfast is included--yogurt, cereal, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, cheese, bacon, etc. etc. We'd stay here again!

Stayed in Trogir (20 min north of Split) for a lovely quaint waterway historic town. There is a great hotel right on the mail plaza along the water. If you google hotels/ Trogir, you will find it. - don't have the name on this computer. Sorry! Split seemed very big and uninviting. Trogir was like being transported back to Medival times especially in the evening! It had wonderful small cobbled walkways as if you are in the middle of a castle village town with shops and restaraunts.

Hello! I stayed at the Hotel Peristil for several nights after the Rick Steves "Best of Eastern Europe" tour in May 2007. I thought it was a great place. The restaurant with outside patio had great food time -- probably the best I had in Split. If you are only in Split for one night, this is a great location -- as the name implies, a section of the hotel's outer walls are actually part of Diocletian's Palace. You are staying in the heart of the most interesting part of Split. Definately not the cheapest option in Split but I thought money well spent. The staff -- both hotel and restaurant -- was very good and eager to please!

Ciao,

Ross
