Where to spend two days before our Eastern European Rick Steves tour

We are taking the RS Eastern European tour in September. It begins in Prague. We plan to be in Europe one day early and would like advice as to where to fly into and what city we should see that day. We'd love to visit Salzburg...is that a good option? Thanks for your advice!

If you are only going to have the one day, it really makes the most sense to stay in Prague, or somewhere very close. Jet lag is going to be tough. In my opinion, I would spend the day getting over it so that I can enjoy the expensive RS tour that I am going on that much more!

Carol - I concur with Mike. Spend the time in Prague. There is so much to see in Prague and you really don't have much free time on the tour. We were there just a day early and wish we had more time... Things to do before the tour... Spend time in the neighborhood beneath the Castle (don't remember what it was called), take a boat ride on the river, visit the Communism museum, just wander around. When you first get there, try to go to the river to the Charles Bridge for the view of the Castle in the evening as it is so beautiful. We did go to a concert one evening on the tour. It was on the main staircase of the museum with the instruments set up on a landing. The atmosphere was wonderful. The remaining items are our 'hindsight' list of things to do when we finally make it back to Prague.

After taking 8 RS tours, we find it most beneficial to be in the city that the tour starts in two days ahead of time so that we can see the sights that are not covered on the RS tour.

Stay in the same hotel you will be with Rick Steves tour so you don't have to move.

Getting settled in Prague isn't a bad idea. Alternatively, Berlin or Vienna are both jumping off points for an Eastern tour. Two days isn't enough time to fully explore either but it's better than nothing.

Looks like it is more expensive to fly into Prague where we begin, and out of the airport by Lake Bled where the tour ends. What city should we fly in and out of that would be a short train ride to both those places? (Does Berlin or Vienna make sense?) Thanks to all for your help!
